As Hilary B prepare to celebrate an incredible 40 years in business in 2025, we wanted to shine a spotlight on the team that’s been making wedding dreams come true for decades.
Hilary B – A Family Affair
Hilary B’s story is one rooted in passion, creativity and family. What began as a personal gesture, with Hilary crafting bespoke wedding dresses for family members, quickly blossomed into a fully fledged business when demand for her beautiful creations became too demanding on her time. Over the years they have been based in several locations but all in the Colchester area, before settling at their current location which is a beautifully tranquil spot just 5 minutes from the A12 at Ardleigh.
Today, the Hilary B team is led by Claire, Hilary’s daughter, alongside the talented and dedicated Hollie and Kerry. Together they form the heart of the bridal team, supported by a wider team of around ten professionals who also contribute to the prom outlet side of the business.
While she may have handed over the reins, Hilary herself is never far away, often helping out on Saturdays and affectionately referring to herself as “the oldest Saturday girl”. Brides and their guests love to hear the personal connection between the staff members and how various members of the family are involved. It is all part of the Hilary B experience.

The Hilary B Experience
I was so happy to have the opportunity to personally visit their store recently. As previously mentioned, this is conveniently located just 5 minutes from the A12 at Ardleigh and is in a lovely setting with ample parking. Although there are plans to extend into another purpose built area, at present you enter through a beautifully lit reception area and home to the colourful array of prom dresses, before coming to the main event…the selection of gorgeous bridalwear.
I didn’t know where to look first! My eyes were captivated by one stunning gown after another, with sparkling accessories and delicate veils wanting my attention too.
In store, brides can find approximately 80 different styles of wedding dresses, with samples available in sizes 12 to 24, ensuring that every bride has the chance to try on beautiful dresses. Their collection spans a stunning palette of shades including classic ivory, as well as popular champagne and mocha tones. Whether you are dreaming of timeless lace or a contemporary gown with a high split skirt, (a trend that has been on the rise), the Hilary B team has something to suit every bride’s taste and personality.
Most brides begin the dress search 12 to 18 months before the wedding day but if you’re on a tighter timeline, don’t worry as Hilary B is well equipped to help brides who are looking closer to their special day. The usual delivery time for a gown is around 5 months, with fittings typically scheduled for about 6 weeks before the wedding. The collection of the dress is usually a week before the wedding.

Top Tips for Bridal Appointments
Hilary B recommends keeping an open mind about the style of your dress. While it’s a great idea to have preferences in mind, many brides end up falling in love with something unexpected. Their team will guide you with warmth and professionalism, to help you relax and enjoy the experience.
Bring a small group of guests, (maybe 3), whose opinions you really trust.
Have a clear budget in mind. Dresses in store range from £700 to £2000, with the average spend being between £1200 and £1500.
Once you’ve found the dress and said yes, you’ll pay a 50% deposit, with the balance due 5 months later. Any alterations are handled separately, paid directly to the seamstress.
