The beautiful gardens provide endless opportunities for your romantic wedding photos, with picturesque backdrops every way you turn. The gardens on the South side of the Tower sweep down from the upper to the lower level via wide stone steps; an ideal setting for group photos where all your guests can be seen clearly.

As well as the main York stone steps, there is a ramp to access all parts of the garden.

Stunning in every season, the garden bursts into life with Spring bulbs, offers vibrant Summer colour, glows with rich Autumn foliage and embraces Winter with soft light and evergreens. Every corner offers a new romantic backdrop, from manicured borders to sweeping lawns complete with an elegant fountain.

The garden is far more than a beautiful backdrop for your wedding photos; it is a versatile space perfect for outdoor ceremonies, relaxed drinks receptions, and a range of entertainment, from garden games to magicians and live performers.

The Gardens Location

Layer Marney Tower’s gardens and grounds stretch out around the historic Tudor gatehouse, forming a sweeping landscape that frames the estate on all sides. The formal gardens lie closest to the main buildings, featuring manicured lawns, borders, and pathways that lead visitors toward the tower, the Long Gallery, and the nearby church. Beyond these cultivated areas, the grounds open into wider parkland with views across the rolling Essex countryside. Situated just south of Colchester, the estate’s outdoor spaces are arranged to highlight the dramatic architecture of the tower while offering tranquil spots for walking, exploring, and taking in the surrounding rural scenery.
